What Are Faulds and Tassets
Faulds are a part of armor worn directly below the breastplate. They reinforce the upper plate and provide waist protection and hip coverage while staying flexible, thanks to several sets of metal plates. Faulds emerged in Western Europe in the 14th century and were commonly worn by knights with a culet, forming a skirt-like part of armor.
Tassets come in a set of two and aim to protect the upper thigh and were historically made from steel. They mostly attach to the bottom edge of the fauld by leather straps and buckles. There are two variants players can choose from: a single piece or segmented. The first one provides more coverage, while the second lets you move freely — single pieces may be too rigid for some roleplays.
All LARP tassets and faulds vary in length, depending on the setting, character, and role. In some cases, faulds and tassets can attach to breastplates, while other uses include layering the pieces. LARPSHOPKEEPER has a few designs you can choose from and even a custom-made option for unique armor sets.
In LARP, armor has several purposes: it protects the bearer, grants scene immersion, and allows them to establish the role of their character. LARP tassets are an important part of all LARP armor sets, as they shield the hips from any damage from the enemy. Yet, before you get a pair, it’s essential to understand what they are, how they connect to faulds, how to choose and fit them properly, and much more. More on that below.
How to Choose Tassets for Roleplay
Every knight has to choose their armor. Be it for live-action roleplay, cosplay events, or medieval fairs, the pieces you get should be comfortable, durable, and aesthetically pleasing. A basic set for shin and thigh protection should include LARP greaves, faulds, and tassets, as well as padding, if applicable. Everything you order should fit well and have a torso connection. So, check that the tassets you get are fully adjustable or can be customized to fit your exact measurements.
If they are too tight, you risk getting circulation cut off. This can be dangerous both in action and when you’re strolling through the Renaissance fair — as soon as you feel burning or tingling in your legs, or notice your skin changing color, take the LARP tassets off right away. If the pieces are too loose, on the other hand, they can slide off and distract you during battle. No one likes chafing or pinching, either.
The pieces you order should also reflect your character expression. Think about the colors they like, the details they’d want to include, and the shape of the armor. Align the way your character presents themselves, and look for LARP tassets to fit this image. At LARPSHOPKEEPER, you can ask for various changes, such as:
-
colors;
-
weathering;
-
paint job;
-
attachments;
-
padding.
In most cases, these are free of charge. But you can also place a completely custom order and get LARP tassets that no one in the community wears but you.
Polyurethane Tassets: Key Features
LARPSHOPKEEPER offers modern polyurethane tassets that are quick to put on and lightweight. You no longer have to bear the steel or bronze armor to protect your hips and thighs — PU is a sturdy but comfortable material for battle. With a set of LARP breastplates and hip armor, all attacks, whether from archers or rogues, will be deflected, and your weak spots will be protected. Any knight will also feel a difference in balance and mobility once they put on polyurethane tassets.
Moreover, these LARP tassets are fully adjustable. They fit most sizes and have leather straps for fitting and security. As long as you properly care for your armor, it will serve you for years on the battlefield. Yet, it doesn’t require complex maintenance. Let’s learn about that next.
Polyurethane Tassets Care and Maintenance
LARP tassets from LARPSHOPKEEPER are easy to care for, transport, and store. We know that being on the battlefield can last for days, but that doesn’t mean you have to carry a big pouch of cleaning supplies with you to keep your armor presentable. At most, polyurethane tassets have to be gently wiped to remove any grime and prevent buildup. A soft cloth soaked in water will do the job.
If staining occurs, try to clean it off immediately. Make sure not to saturate the PU and leather straps in water, or they might get damaged or deformed. When you are back home, use a mild soap solution on the surface and pat it dry right away. Avoid putting any armor pieces in the sun — UV light damages and discolors the LARP tassets. It is recommended not to use dry cleaning, harsh chemicals, or stiff brushes on the polyurethane armor.
When you are not in character, keep the tassets in a dark, dry place. While they are not made out of steel and are not prone to rusting, moisture can still affect the material composition. So, to keep your LARP tassets looking new and ready for battle, place them in a closet or storage with enough ventilation.
Order Your LARP Tassets
Tassets offer practical protection for upper thighs and hips. Combined with other elements, they are a good piece both for new roleplayers and experienced knights who are looking for something fresh. Yet, it is important to know how to choose LARP tassets so they allow enough comfort and do not restrict your movement when you are fighting or cosplaying. Polyurethane armor provides just that — ease of use, mobility, and minimal maintenance.
In addition to the high quality, LARPSHOPKEEPER tassets are also customizable. Most of the changes, such as colors and details, are free of charge, but you can place a custom order, and we will create something completely new for your unique character! Whether you are a classic medieval knight or a mystical armored creature, just provide our team of artisans with a detailed technical assignment, and we will bring your ideas to life.
